How to Create a Flashcard

Add custom cards to your deck for words and kanji Waffuru doesn't cover

February 27, 2026 · Waffuru Team

Waffuru's database covers over 250,000 cards, but language is infinite. If you encounter a word, kanji, or expression that isn't in our database, you can create a custom flashcard that slots right into your study sessions.

Creating a Card

Head to the Create Card page from the navigation menu. Select the card type (Word, Kanji, Radical, or Kana) and fill in the required fields. Each type has different fields: words need a reading and meaning, kanji need readings and meanings, and so on.

What You Can Customize

  • Front text: the Japanese characters displayed during review
  • Readings: hiragana readings (on'yomi and kun'yomi for kanji, standard reading for words)
  • Meanings: English definitions, as many as you need
  • Example sentences: optional context sentences to reinforce usage
  • Notes: personal mnemonics or memory aids

How Custom Cards Fit Into Your Sessions

User-created cards sit at the top of the new card priority queue. They're introduced before search queue cards, collection cards, and the master deck. This means any card you create will appear in your very next study session (subject to your daily new card limit).

Once introduced, custom cards follow the same FSRS spaced repetition schedule as every other card. They show up for review at the same optimized intervals.
