Under the Hood
Waffuru isn't just flashcards. It's a complete ecosystem designed to accompany you from zero to fluency. Flip a card to learn more, or read our problem statement.
Why Waffuru?
Waffuru was developed as an alternative to Anki for Japanese study. Common frustrations with Anki are juggling multiple decks, ease of card creation, and lapsing on reviews. Waffuru solves these problems and more.
Multiple decks
Waffuru has no decks in the traditional sense. Instead, you have a queue, where you can create your own cards, search for existing ones, or add whole collections. When you just want to keep going and not worry about what's coming next, lay back and let our weighted frequency card ranking system feed you the cards that make the most sense. Whatever you do, everything is always accessible under one button, one unified stats system, and a consistent card format.
Card creation
Most of the time with Waffuru, you won't need to create new cards at all. If you would like to quickly redirect your study into a new area, simply browse our collections, where you can add entire textbooks of vocabulary, lists of food terms, or user made lists directly to the front of your queue. If you need a new card for a word you just read, simply use our search feature to find the already created card which will seamlessly integrate into your study. If we somehow don't have the card you need, fall back to creating it yourself, and it'll slot right in. When you finish your added cards, you will continue being fed new cards from the master list in your preferred frequency order, no interruptions.
Review lapses
Going on vacation? Feel free to use our freeze feature to keep your reviews from piling up. Forgot to do that? Use our roll-back feature to pretend like that never happened, or use our upcoming review reset session feature to individually reset cards you've forgotten from your review queue. Never again let backed up reviews keep you from getting back in the game and continuing your progress.
And so much more.
One of the ideas behind Waffuru was to create a natural extension of the Core 2k/6k style decks into a Core every-word-in-the-dictionary style deck. However we realize that frequency data isn't everything with language, so we built a living elo system into Waffuru that reranks cards over time based on user ratings and occasional head-to-head matchups that we feed you. This, combined with the robust card data and flexibility with card re-ordering is intended to create a system strictly preferrable to Anki for Japanese study.
