How to Create a Collection

Build and share study paths with the Waffuru community

February 28, 2026 · Waffuru Team

Collections are ordered sets of flashcards organized around a theme, textbook, or learning goal. Premium users can create and share their own. Here's how.

Step 1: Start a New Collection

Go to the Collections page and click "Create Collection." Give it a name, a short description, and optionally assign a category (textbook, JLPT level, topic, etc.). You can always edit these details later.

Step 2: Add Cards

Use the built-in search to find cards and add them to your collection. You can search by Japanese text, reading, or English meaning. Cards are added to the end of the collection by default, but you can drag them into any order.

Step 3: Order Matters

The order of cards in a collection is the order subscribers will encounter them. Think about progression: start with simpler vocabulary and build toward more complex words. If prerequisite injection is enabled for a subscriber, Waffuru will still insert any missing radicals or kanji automatically, but your ordering determines the overall flow.

Step 4: Publish or Keep Private

You can keep a collection private for personal use or publish it for everyone. Published collections appear in the community browse page where other users can subscribe. You can unpublish at any time without affecting existing subscribers.

  • Collections can contain any mix of card types (kana, radical, kanji, word)
  • There's no card limit, so collections can range from a focused set of 20 to full paths of 2,000+
  • Subscribers receive your cards in order, integrated into their normal study sessions
  • You can update a published collection and new cards are appended for existing subscribers
